break up

It’s a Break Up…Not a Break Down!

We’ve all been there…that moment right after you hear those dreaded four words, “we need to talk.” Your mind starts racing, your heart beats faster, and you think you’re going to be sick. You’re suddenly in the middle of a break up and it’s one of the worst feelings in the world. Sadly, it doesn’t just go away overnight.

Like the song, breaking up really is hard to do. Whether you are ending a year-long relationship or a 20-year marriage, breaking up can throw your whole world into orbit. And breaking up doesn’t just have to involve a romantic relationship – you can break up with a friend, a family member, or even your mechanic – although that one may not be so hard.  The truth is, we all deal with the break down of a relationship differently: some of us listen to Taylor Swift on repeat and eat our weight in ice cream, some people want to spend all their time with friends, while others just want to be alone. No matter how you cope with this stress, one thing is for certain, you need to take care of YOU, physically and emotionally.

The truth is, heartache can cause actual physical pain. You lose sleep, you lose your appetite, and you feel incomplete. It can actually lower your whole immune system, causing you to get sick. It may even be so bad that you don’t want to leave your bed.

Now, heartache isn’t going to last forever, and because there is no magic pill to make the pain go away, all we can do is learn and grow. Use this time to better yourself: take up a hobby, get into a workout routine, embrace your uniqueness, and do things that make you happy. Don’t let a break up break you. Make the most of a terrible situation and use this time to address your needs and become an even better person.
